Eagle Eye

Hello and good day to you all my eager Eagles. Once again it is I, Eagle Eye, here to keep you updated in all the important matters of Ravenclaw Tower. I hope I find you well.

Before we get down to business with your Ravenclaw related queries I must award a prize for the riddle I posted last time. All your answers were indeed correct (I especially liked Crystal's eagle suggestion, CMel's thestral, and of course Tricia's logical answer - well reasoned!) but the winner as selected by random.org is Judith aka Jayannell! Friday was the name of the man's horse (or beast of your choosing). Congratulations my friend! You win the Ravelry pattern of your choice up to the value of $6 as gifted by Sadielou. Please contact her to arrange the 'delivery' of your prize.

I have another riddle for you this week, but this time it is only for the joy of learning.
He makes shoes without leather, with four elements put together
Fire, water, earth and air, and every customer takes two pair.
What am I?
Answers on a postcard please (or a PM to Sadielou will do).

This week I have had several owls popping by for a quick visit. It can sometimes get lonely just hanging up here and thinking of riddles to pose to students so the mail was a welcome interruption. Let me dig through my messages to see what's been worrying our wee wizards and witches this week.

Dear Eagle Eye. I keep hearing that the Tower was blown up last term, and that there was a great big hole in the wall. How on earth did THAT happen?

Ah, yes. That was quite the adventure last term. Well, it all began with the Friday Night Fondoo Parties which have now become commonplace in the tower. After a particularly stressful week some of the elder students began making some tasty alcoholic beverages for one another to reward themselves for their hard work and commiserate over their misfortunes. It didn't take long for some of the more enterprising chemists to set up a martini still in the lab (the work area which appeared last term for Ravenclaw students in order for them to perform experiments in peace and quiet when completing their class assignments). Shortly afterwards someone else managed to enchant all the taps in the tower to dispense a variety of margaritas, and before we knew it all heck had broken loose and spells were flying around left, right and centre. An entire wall of the Tower fell away in a crumble of dust and mortar and Sadielou's OWL Wings shawl made a bid for freedom after it caught the ricochet of an avifors charm which had been bouncing around...

Needless to say Isisonearth was not pleased with the mess this made and (after securing our copious library and many bookcases) dispatched as many students to clean up as she could lay her hands on. Many conjured up dishcloths in the last couple of days of term which they were able to submit as Ravelympics projects in the 'platter lift' category and so they counted as part of Quidditch for that term too. All was well that ended well, though this adventure may be a contributing factor to the lab having been reduced in size this term. I have a sneaking suspicion that there are plenty of new adventures which lie behind the door marked 'Convocation' in the corner of the Tower however...

Dear Eagle Eye. What is this RHA that everyone is talking about? Why must we do it for Mr Briney?!

Oh yes, the Mr Briney situation. Hah. Well, Mr Brineydeep once made a comment to our very own Brineydeep that it is just not good enough that the HP game which occupies so much of her time has not recently resulted in Ravenclaw winning the cup. He has categorically stated that he does not wish to be married to a loser. When Brineydeep told us of her husband's proclamation the Ravenclaws were aghast and decided they must do everything in their power to save Brineydeep's marriage! Henceforth, the Ravenclaws resolved to do their utmost to win the Cup back this term.

The RHA is the abbreviated term for the Ravenclaw Husband's Auxilliary, the club of which Mr Briney is leader and therefore King of the Losers. A competition has been launched in the tower for those that wish to craft RHA themed products for their significant others - be they husband, partner, girlfriend or boyfriend, anyone who can be considered a 'knitting widow' is eligible. Beer Cozies have so far been the RHA item of choice, a brilliant example of which can be seen in fricknfrack's awesome post 8562 in the Ravenclaw Common Room.

Goodness, here comes another student I must question before they can earn their entry to the Tower. You'd better be on your way too, aren't class assignments to be completed by Monday?

Soar Ravenclaw!

Library of the Week!

Hmm I missed Monday this week. Someone hit me with a remebrall the next time I am late okay!?

This weeks library is from a personal home library. I just loved the little corner of desk showing and then archways filled with books. It sort of reminds me of what the HoH's office might look like. :)

Eagle Eye

Hello, good morning, good afternoon or good evening Young Ravenclaws. It is I, Eagle Eye, trusted guardian of Ravenclaw Tower here to check in with my students and make sure you know all the ins and outs of the Tower happenings. But first you must prove your mettle. As ever I have a riddle for you.
A man went on a trip on Friday, stayed for 2 days and returned on Friday. How is that possible?
Post your answers in the comment box for this entry and you may win a prize, although of course we Eagles know that learning is its own reward.

Now onto the Tower News. I can hardly believe what a talkative group of students we have this year - over two hundred pages of posts in your first two weeks! I think there is too much chatting going on and not enough spellwork. I have been protecting the Common Room for many a year here at Hogwarts and I have seen a lot of students come and go, but truly there has never been a House like this for size and (I am pleased to see) for enthusiasm. It is for this reason that our respected Head of House Isisonearth assigned me the additional duty of keeping all students up to date with the chatter and activites of the Tower, so that no student will remain confused.

Most of the first few days in the New Tower were spent on introductions and anticipation of classes. Several new Merry Beasts moved in - that'd be the pets and familiars of several of our students which run around getting under people's feet in semi-colons or italics ::like this:: or this - and started making a mess, gambolling around having parties immediately on their arrival.

When classes were posted there was a lot of excitement and a few questions floating around about what was required. Don't forget to ask your Prefects Silverwing26 and sfcorgi if you are unsure of any of the rules of the game. The important thing to know is that you must turn in just one class each month to continue to play. Quidditch is not mandatory, OWLs are not mandatory, Headmistress Challenges are not mandatory, Tower Competitions are not mandatory - but all are great fun and offer a new way to challenge yourself so go right ahead and see what you can accomplish - you'll be glad you did.

As usual OWLs quickly became a hot topic in the Common Room. Ideas, proposals, encouragement and explanation exploded from every corner. Your fellow students can be a great resource if you are unsure of your OWL specifications. Some of them have been playing the game for six whole terms! Can you believe that? That's 18 months of their lives. Soon they'll be cast in bronze and affixed to a door like me, and then they will be truly permanent features around here.

Tower competition have also been popping up left and right. This month we have May Monkey Madness where you can win a prize for "finding" a monkey in one of your class projects; we have May Flowers which follows on from the lovely April Showers competition; we have a Ravenclaw Pride Drawing in which our HoH secretly selects a class and every Ravenclaw who submits an assignment for it will be entered into a prize draw. There are also Tower Awards to collect for special achievement: The Ravens Heart can be collected by anyone who completes all 6 classes in a month and The Star of Isis is awarded to people who submit outstanding projects or make a valuable contribution in any way our HoH deems exemplary. Finally we have the Convocation, in which certain high-achieving Ravenclaws may challenge themselves to soar to even higher heights in a new adventure. All competitions are linked in the header of the Common Room so that you may get more detailed information at your fingertips.

Is there anything about Ravenclaw Tower that remains a mystery to you? Perhaps you keep hearing that the Tower was missing a wall last term, or something to do with Schrodinger's Yeti that makes no sense at all? Or maybe you want to know just who this Foxy character is, and why does his bed fly? Not to worry dear students, put forth your questions to me and I shall endeavour to answer all your Ravenclaw related queries next time.

It is most unfortunate that I must return to my post now having only explained the official news of the Tower to you, Young Ravenclaw. Of course I cannot allow the Tower to go unguarded for too long in case some crafty Slytherin tries to sneak past me without proving their reasoning. Rest assured I shall return next week to update you more on the goings on in our magnificent Common Room. Until then I think it best you return to your studies.

Soar Ravenclaw!

OWL Party!

This Saturday let's get the Tower together for an O.W.L. party!

Merry Beasts will be in charge of decorations and refreshments:)

Students, you are in charge of telling us all about your project and posting an update for us...and I want pictures! I'll be working on my O.W.L. Saturday to craft along with me.

Everyone that leaves a comment on this blog entry with the post number of your progress picture will be entered in a random drawing to win a prize.

♥Isis

As GazeboGal suggested lets get those O.W.L.s tagged bronzeowlspring10!

One more addition. Ravenclaw's Hat Challengers can post their O.W.L. updates on Friday and enter the drawing. No penalties for representing our House on the Pitch!

IMPORTANT!!! DADA information

The header of the DADA thread now states:

ETA, part IV: Like I said, I don’t care if an item was in your queue before you started looking at the assignment. Sometimes you hear rumors of information before you hear the information. I don’t even mind if you go into another Common Room and ask if anyone has a particular pattern. Sometimes the best way to get information is just to ask if they’ve heard something you’d like to know about. But asking them to add the pattern is just not on. It’s tantamount to being a double agent, letting them know what you’d like to hear, rather than letting them tell you. If I find out that you’ve been asking people to add the pattern you want to make to their queue, I will not hesitate to award your points to another house. Just try me if you think I won’t.

So please make sure you're not asking others to add something to their queue just so you can do it in DADA.

Library of the Week

Compiling a Blog List

Attention all Ravenclaws that blog!

We’d like to put together a list of blogs written by members of the tower and post the list here in the Ravenclaw Aerie. The hope is to encourage conversation and community outside of the tower. Adding your blog to the list is entirely voluntary.

If you’re interested in letting other Ravenclaws know about your blog, PM BrineyDeep with the following:

* Your Ravelry ID (which you’ll give me just by PMing me)
* The name of your blog
* The URL for your blog
* Up to 3 words describing what you write about

We will post something on this in about a week, so if you can send Briney your info by May 14th, that would be greatly appreciated!

Chicago Manual of Style

MightyGoodYarn steps up to speak

I have an announcement!

During our break in April, I ran (and I use that term loosely) the Chicago Manual of Style contest. The rules were to interpret the Chicago Manual of Style via fiber. The winner would be determined randomly, which is only fitting for a contest centered around such a structured and orderly book. And that’s pretty much it.

The random number generator tells me that the prize goes to…

GazeboGal! (See post 28344 in the Winter Common Room for her entry.)

GazeboGal wins some lovely pink stuff from FricknFrack!

Great work, everyone! I hope you enjoyed yourself with this small and rather random contest.

Thank you, everyone!

May Monkey Madness!

It was a quiet Wednesday Morning in the Tower when InsanKnitty and Soprano1 got up early to quickly discuss plans for the term and how to manage sharing the TimeTurner they’d received from PrincessOnica at the end of the Winter term….

InsanKnitty saw what she thought was a Monkey scurrying out of the Lab door….

Soprano1… did you see that??? What on earth? I swear that was a Monkey…

InsanKnitty and Soprano1 ran to the lab and opened the door to find a troop of Monkeys jumping on the lab benches, hanging from the ceiling, and attempting to climb through the rafters! Many of the monkeys made a break for the lab door… toppling InsanKnitty on their way out… Soprano1 made a quick incantation of ‘Alohamora’ and the door shut… enclosing a few dozen monkeys in the lab, but not knowing how many had escaped…..

On one of the tables was a vial labeled ‘Sea Monkeys’ that had spilled and mixed with another vial labeled ‘rapid grow’…

Soprano1 yelled over the noisy chattering Monkeys… ‘Looks like a case of mutation… I think we need to call in Isisonearth… I have NO clue who had these two vials near each other or how they got spilled, but we’re going to need more than just the average cleanup here… ’

Insanknitty got up, brushing off her robes and responded ‘Ok, I’ll see if I can’t start gathering monkeys from within the dorms….’

If you see a monkey in any of the classes, please please let us know… and make sure you label it so we can go back to collect it as soon as possible… you can find your appropriate tag and instructions…here.

What's Behind the Door?

!ATTENTION!

Isisonearth enters the Common Room and surveys the students present, one by one. On her face appears a look of thoughtful concern.

She threads her way through the chairs and the stacks of books to where you sit -- yes, you! -- innocently unpacking your trunk. She says quietly, “Join me in my office, please. There is a matter of urgent concern.”

Puzzled, you follow Isisonearth into her office, where she has amassed a spectacular collection of astronomical devices, dusty books, and portraits of past Heads of Ravenclaw House. In particular, you note the portrait of CMelvin, leaning close to hear what Isis is about to say.

“There has been a discovery,” Isis tells you, without preamble. “You’ll recall the stories of laboratory explosions and other mayhem that occurred in our prior term, of course. It appears that this term, Hogwarts Castle has prepared for our arrival. Our laboratory facilities have been somewhat edged out, you see.

“Oh, don’t worry,” she assures you. “There is still plenty of room for you and your microscope. But when I unlocked the Common Room for our present term, I discovered that the laboratory was reduced somewhat, and in its place now stands a most mysterious doorway. You’ll find it for yourself if you look to the left of the lab entrance, behind the curtains I conjured to conceal its presence… for now.”

Isis continues. “You’ll understand that the faculty found it necessary to keep students at bay, at least at first. You see, this door does not open. It is small, much smaller than the average student, made of solid oak wood, and its iron knob does not budge. A brass knocker in the shape of an eagle’s head hangs from this door, and underneath the eagle’s head are letters in an ancient alphabet that spell, ’CONVOCATION.’

“Other heads of houses have advised me to show caution, and while in principle, I agree,” Isis says, tapping her fingers together, “I also hold the responsibility of carrying on the proud heritage of Ravenclaw Tower. We are not a house that shies away from an intellectual challenge, however daunting, and I will not have a mysterious, locked doorway sit in my Common Room for an entire term without knowing what lies behind it!”

Isis sits down carefully in the grand rococo chair behind her desk. “That is why I have summoned you to my office. You have shown great promise thus far in your studies. Clearly, you possess some measure of talent. I am inviting you to join me in this adventure of discovery.

“I have no doubt that great risk of injury, both of the body and mind, awaits you should you seek to uncover this newest secret of Hogwarts Castle. I will not require any student to participate in this challenge. However, glory, honor, supreme intellectual satisfaction, and at least one badge will be yours if you should solve this puzzle. I know that not every student will find their way to the end of the journey, for I suspect a total score of 450 points over the entire term will be required to reach the final conclusion.

“Calm yourself, dear,” Isis says, conjuring a soft tissue out of mid-air with a wave of her wand. You take the tissue and wipe tears of uncertainty and fear from your eyes. “I know that seems impossible, particularly for those students not yet able to attempt two OWLs. However, you will be amazed when you learn of your own potential, particularly when you take into account possible Quidditch points. Why, just observe your addle-brained fellow student MightyGoodYarn, who somehow broke 500 points last term yet finished no more than nine classes. Still not sure about that girl - you might steer clear, yes? Just to be safe?

“Of course, even those students who do not achieve the final conclusion to this adventure will find rewards along the way. That’s right: multiple milestones have been placed to recognize the achievements of mid-level students. I cannot tell you where they are, of course. You will have to discover for yourself the prizes and dangers that lie before you.

Isis stands and with a flick of her wand summons a book and quill from her shelf. “Yes, well, that’s enough chit-chat. If you feel that you are ready to attempt this glorious endeavor, please follow this link to sign yourself up. Nobody is pressuring you to participate; you are still welcome to spend time with us in the Common Room, and you will suffer no penalty (social or otherwise) if you choose to decline this invitation.

“I do hope you’ll try to help us out, however,” Isis tells you. “That d-mned door is driving me crazy.”

She departs from her office, leaving you to ponder the book before you. Follow this link to sign up. Otherwise, you may leave the office and play along this term as usual.

Recipe for Success: OWL!

Have you heard? Of all the things in HPKCHC the O.W.L. exams earn the most points! Do you want to try an O.W.L. but don’t know where to start? Here you will find all the ingredients necessary that, when mixed correctly, will yield a successful O.W.L project. I encourage everyone to go for an O.W.L., which includes first years! Dream big, dream crazy, dream wonderful, dream in O.W.L.s!

The Plan
3 cups Thyme
½ c - infinity Challenge
2 tsp Anti-boredom Lemon Juice
2 ¾ cups Materials (yarn, needles, stitch markers, pattern, etc)
Dash, splash, or bucket of Creativity

First you must make sure that the project in question is lengthy enough to take approximately two and half months to complete. However, it is equally important to make sure that the project is not so large that there won’t be time to finish it. There should be a dimension of challenge, but how much difficulty is really up to you and what you like to knit.

Here is where you should mix in the anti-boredom lemon juice, to make sure that, if you take on a larger afghan, you won’t get so bored with it that you find yourself in the common room eating toasty marshmallows rather than working on the thing.

Fold in with the mixture materials and creativity. Compare against the O.W.L.s descriptions. Which O.W.L. interests you creatively, that you have materials for, gives you a challenge, you have enough but not too much thyme to make, and won’t get bored?

Some ‘Claws really like this stage of the O.W.L. They like to plan. They make calculations based on how long it takes them to do a pattern repeat to figure out how long the whole project will take. Then they figure out how much they need to knit each day to finish the project in time. You can do this if you want, but it is not necessary!

Your Plan is complete!

The Proposal
2 bowls of Swatches
(1 Ruler)
1 – 3 squares of Pictures
10 – however many Words in prose or poetry

Good thing we went and made a Plan first, it makes the proposal so much easier! Every project requires a swatch, so now is the time to do that. The examiners like to see that you tried different needle sizes, and it is a good thing to do anyway! Use the Ruler to check your gauge, if necessary.

Gather your swatches and all you materials (you have them from mixing the plan, right?) and take pictures. Write a description that includes your name and house, which Exam you will be sitting, what project you will be making, any challenges you may face or techniques new to you, and a description of all materials you will use.

Post in the O.W.L. thread with your pictures and description. The examiners are very nice! Do not be afraid, if anything is amiss in your proposal they will help you correct it. They are here for you!

The Knitting
7+ cups of Coffee (or tea, or hot cocoa)
The Tower and O.W.L. help thread

Once your proposal is approved it is time to get knitting! If you hit any snags or get bored because you forgot the anti-boredom lemon juice pop on into the Tower or O.W.L. Help and tell us all about it. We love to help one another out!

Soar!

Mrs. Lovegood Memorial Mad Scientist Award!

MightyGoodYarn enters common room wearing protective goggles and a lab coat. She tacks onto the noticeboard a piece of parchment, which reads…

ANNOUNCEMENT
The Second Mrs. Lovegood Memorial Prize for Mad Scientist of Ravenclaw Tower

This term we shall continue the contest within Ravenclaw House to recognize accomplishments in the field of experimental magic research.

There are many simple ways to fulfill your class assignments and Quidditch responsibilities. Earning points is of course a laudable goal. Every Ravenclaw knows, however, that the search for knowledge is the most honorable of ambitions. This prize was created to reward those Ravenclaws who venture far outside the ordinary expectations of magical education and attempt the daring - the new - the completely and totally ridiculous.

Have you ever thought about interpreting the Beatles’ White Album via crochet? Ever had the inclination to post a homework explanation in iambic hexameter? Perhaps you’ve daydreamed of knitting a life-sized bust of Queen Elizabeth II. Maybe you’ve decided that June is the month to craft your interpretation of the Battle of Agincourt. These attempts, however loony, deserve a nomination. It’s not just projects, either -- it could be concepts, theoretical work, or intellectual brilliance in conversation.

Note that you do not have to finish these projects. They might even be a complete failure. But boy, did you aim high.

For reference, our First Mrs. Lovegood Memorial Prize for Mad Scientist of Ravenclaw Tower resulted in a tie between BrineyDeep’s periodic table of cupcakes, and Boppingbeth’s spinning wheel which she constructed from scratch. You can see all five finalists from last term here.

HOW TO NOMINATE:
Follow this link.
Fill in the name of the lunatic person whom you are nominating.
BRIEFLY name the project or other accomplishment that has attracted your attention. (Anything that happens during Spring ‘10 term is eligible.)

VOTING:
Will take place near the end of the term.
Will be for not just one project but for each nominee’s body of work.
The winner receives a prize and lasting fame.

Remember the Ravenclaw motto: “If you fail, fail spectacularly.”

I am available for questions.
