February comes to a close...

Oh, fellow 'Claws, what an exciting and amazing month this has been!

Was it Ravelympics that has kept us all going right to the end, working our tails off? Often the second month sees a sharp drop-off in class submissions, but this month I just see tons of amazing projects being handed in to classes.

We have about 5 hours left of February before classes close. I can't wait to start some new assignments tomorrow... though I'm most committed to finishing my two OWLs. Was I insane, taking on two OWLs? Yes, probably. But they're both beautiful and I can't wait to own them, so I'll be back to work on them this evening after taking a break for dinner. I finished two Ravelympics/Quidditch projects today, and now I'm heading back to the OWLs so I can get them done and handed in and then make some socks!

Condensed: Common Room Chatter

I hope you all had a lovely week Claws! Here's the chat cut down to manageable bitesized chunks, just in case you missed out coz you were working super hard on finishing up projects for class, Ravelympics or even that pesky RL that keeps getting in the way of the crafting time...

I'm picking up where I left off on Sunday: Page 590 if you're interested! Boppingbeth posted an excellent update pic of her Olympic sweater (post 14752) and xoxoMargot told us how great her mum had been to her lately. Jayanell won a prize from Hilltopkatie, Yakira announced that she and Larry were well on the road to recovery and eightlegeddj wondered about an Elvis (the cat) related-issue which had us all in problem-solving mode trying to figure out contraptions to stop water slopping all over her kitchen floor. This led to discussions on other mental cats. RChrispy announced that she's unexpectedly pregnant, and everyone offered nice, positive congratulations. Wingedorange told us that she's awaiting news of acceptance from grad schools so we're keeping our fingers crossed for her until she hears back. Wildlilly offered a cat with jazz hands to keep her spirits up in post 14858 and MightyGoodYarn posted her incredible OWL progress in post 14874. Gazebogal clarified the job of the Sock Chaser for those that were confused (post 14879). Jayannell mentioned that she found MGY's article in Pieceworks magazine! Tangledskein linked us to more information on the cool Robot building competition her family's involved with (post 14911). Babies and kitties and publishing your designs in knitting magazines were discussed over the next few pages (598-9) and lots of weekly update plans were updated and planned.

On Monday, QallieQ said that she'd signed up for ice skating lessons. AND... It was insanKnitty's first day at her new job! She wore one of DevonC's prize necklaces and everyone wished her luck (post 14969). Some of the Towermates swapped stories about productions of the Wizard of Oz and Wiz and other such musical things (page 600). Greenegirl told us about a supercool blog she found that was pretty topical with our whole blowing up the tower thing (post 15008). SFCorgi appealed for some ideas of crafty things to do with the kids she'll visit on her trip to Belize (post 15039) and I'm sure she'd still appreciate any suggestions folks have. Wildlilly had recommended sweet almond milk to inkslinger1121 and she gave it her seal of approval. abetterjulie asked whether it might be acceptable to turn in one knee-high sock for a class, and got some helpful responses (post 15060) and isisonearth confused everyone (especially the Ysolda fans) with her not-Ripley hat, which turned out to be 'Felicity'(post 15072). Sock knitting Claws of the Tower helped DevonC reword a tricky bit of her pattern so it read more clearly. -Knit-Chick- posted some funky cake pics for NoNeinNyet's birthday (post 15093). When she got home from work insanKnitty updated us on her day, see post 15117 for details.

Tuesday was busy busy busy in the tower. It brought discussions on Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, and of course Sense and Sensbility and Sea Monsters too (page 606). Poor Mommy2Benny showed us she was going to have to frog and restart her OWL sweater again, and she's having work troubles, AND someone broke her favourite wine glass! And then... can you believe it... the majesty that is the Ravenclaw Book List was born, thanks to WildLilly's suggestion and Soprano1's hard work! Some wine chat was chatted (page 606 onwards) by the self-confessed wine snobs of which SFCorgi is the queen, having a career in the biz. See post 15183 for evidence. Boppingbeth's daughter got accepted to university and MGY found a curling league in her town. Mommy2Benny had me in fits of laughter all day, but especially for post 15192, and then told us more about her lovely cats over the next few pages. Meanwhile, insanKnitty has made actual real Potter's Puppet Pals (post 15197)! RNsallyanne told us a little about how hard she's finding it as a mum going back to school in post 15208. DevonC posted her sock pattern for 'Love Socks' so go have a look. Eightlegeddj had a curiously swollen jaw on Tuesday and got us all worried... she thinks it might be a food allergy, which could be a problem as she attends culinary school! Isisonearth conducted some experiments in the lab today (post 15284). Crankyangel told us about her cousin's child who was having scary brain surgery so we added wee Sammantha to the candle lighting list, and isisonearth told us the awfully sad story of one of the kids at her son's school who died unexpectedly. Brineydeep came in and brightened all our days with her picture of the Periodic Table in Cupcakes (post 15332 and also below here on the blog!) which she quite rightly won a prize for.

On Wednesday People advised what made good material for soft soft soft hats for chemo patients on page 616, and then between eightlegeddj, inkslinger1121 and Brineydeep the idea for the Great Ravenclaw Cookie Swap was born! Gusgus told us that she'd be home alone for a while this weekend and we all rallied round suggesting things to keep her busy. More plans were announced and updated, and then Beyby told us all about her chocolate high as a result of her boss bringing sweets into work. Then we moved on to talk more about allergies. Ashleytree announced her plans to go to Stitches West this year and then started another thread about it so witches from all houses can discuss it (post 15499). Inkslinger1121 and Sadielou were nominated as Cookie Swap Goddesses by Gazebogal (post 15517) and plans between us ensued. Ashleytree and SFCorgi decided they were long-lost sisters in post 15531. MariainCT freaked us all out a little when explained how the doctors test for allergies (post15571) in the ongoing food discussion.

Gazebogal announced that she'd finished her Thaumaturgy independent study on Thursday! (post 15585) FINISHED IT! Woop! Lots of dancing and celebration suggestions ensued. Isisonearth awarded xscars a Star of Isis for her Gillyweed experiment (post 15608). Beyby had an upside-down morning in a dentist's chair so didn't get to do her normal coffee or tea cup -clink- with her Ravenclaw sisters. Minsue posted some incredible OWL progress in post 15674, and CMelvin asked for proofreaders for her essay for the weekend. Eightlegeddj dyed her hands blue - smurf blue though, coz she's old skool. Pics of her dying escapade are in post 15698. Plans were made with Ravenclaws for Stitches East (starting on post 15633). Eightlegeddj had some horrible personal news this week which she shared in her post 15730. Owenj had a few sweater queries which kept us confused and busy for a while. QallieQ survived her iceskating lesson with much tiredness but managed not to fall over!

Danemum checked in on Friday, she managed to hand in a project despite all her injuries and is beginning to feel a little better. Isisonearth awarded her a Star, and then Sadielou one for her Astronomy assignment too. Then, suddenly... CRAAAACK! Friday morning brought calamity to the Tower! The tale begins in MightyGoodYarn's post 15782, where a huge noise can be heard. She traces it to the lab and finds bedlam amongst the wreckage of several experiments and projects, before retreating to the safety of her bed! The walls began to crumble and then our esteemed HOH took charge, sending students scurrying to salvage all that they could. Big Eagles shouted left and right for their Little Eagles, while -Knit-Chick- grabbed Yakira's George gillyweed (post 15803). MGY gets knocked out by an erratic flying project in 15816. Tangledskein worried about the safety of her fellow students and conjured hardhats in post 15842. In the mean time Jayannell commended BrineyDeep on her detailed notes for one of her projects, and MissPinky told us that you can make healthy brownies using black beans (post 15862) though she later admits they're not a great substitute for the real thing. Xamonster stabbed herself in the finger with an icicle. Back in the Tower things precautionary measures were still being taken as isisonearth requested books be moved to the shelves lining the interior walls so they didn't fall through the gaping hole (post 15876). A single-cell organism swap was suggested in post 15897, though it will probably be separate from the cookie swap. Foxy flew around and rescued all the Merry beasts but then Gazebogal explains that she has no electricity a bit later due to storm weather! (post 15928) TrigirlJ told us about the Dipped Infinity Scarf Kit she got from Sunshine Yarns in post 15950. Seakame and Beyby test their friendship in page 639.

On Saturday Mommy2Benny and inkslinger1121 swapped stories of their military men, then Mommy2Benny introduced the topic of baby names. Loads of claws contributed their favourites from page 640 onwards. Bandbabe told us about her kitty misbehaving and unravelling her OWL (post 16013)! InsanKnitty's Ron puppet had an adventure with a Sea Lettuce in her herbology project (16022). There was some olympics chat on page 642, and then isisonearth got stern in post 16048, calling for Claws to clean up the tower mess! Wildlilly was MIA for a while but reappeared refreshed after a night in with some girlfriends. InsanKnitty showed off her son's wooden derby car in post 16067. Sadielou clarified the March of Socks event we're having next month and a few Claws mentioned that they were getting some time to themselves over the weekend for guilt-free knitting. Just as well, as the end-of-month madness started with everyone panicking about how much they still had to do and projects were being turned in left, right and centre! Theflyinggoat has the worst trouble as she's without power and doesn't know if she'll get things handed in on time! RNcrowthers has been working hard trying to get things sorted for her mum in a new place and to make sure her dog gets to stay with her. She got some really brilliant news on Saturday, she told us she's got a job! And one close to home too! See post 16155 for details. Sadly GusGus didn't get the job she interviewed for but her Claw sisters gave her some sound advice on the polite way to deal with the situation. Dixiehellcat posted her first ever lace for Quidditch (post 16213). Xamonster asked for some candle-lighting for her grandpa who's unwell. Eightlegeddj posted a beautiful scarf for transfig in post 16231 and Gazebogal announced that she's got power back and managed to turn in all six classes just in time!

That's us upto page 650 mydears, the rest can wait till next week. Take care! xx Sadielou

The Ravenclaw Book List

Dear Fellow Claws... announcing....

Ever wonder what Ravenclaws are reading? Ever get to the end of your current book and have no idea what to read next? Here, my friends, is the answer!

You, yes you, can add your books to the list, and can comment on other people's book choices as well.

The rules: Add your books. If you want to comment on someone else's book, 1)identify yourself and 2) if you're going to say something negative about it, be specific. Not "This book was terrible" but "I found the style of this book dry and the content uninformative." Why? Because this will help avoid unnecessarily hurt feelings!

There is a link in the sidebar. Please feel free to add your books at any time!

BrineyDeep: The Spirit of a True Ravenclaw

I'm inspired. BrineyDeep shared this fabulous picture on the forum, and I just thought everyone needed to see it. Note the attention to detail. I now want to eat the entire Periodic Table, in Technicolor icing.

Click the picture to see the whole thing.

Condensed: Common Room Chatter

Sadielou here, stopping by to give you a day-by-day update on the chatter that's been flying around the Tower this week. 70ish pages in 7ish paragraphs!

Last Sunday we were mostly talking about: IKEA sofabeds, Katestamps' recovery update blog and lots and lots of progress updates and FO pictures. -Knit-Chick- showed us some cool pics of her experiment with Kool Aid dyeing (post 13420) and also a pic of an awesome yarn skein bun (post 13431). Sunday also brought the end of the Love Myself First competition as it was indeed Valentines Day, so our talented Silverwing26 showed us a lovely montage of all the turned in projects later in the week (post 13677 and below on the blog).

Beyby returned on Monday after a bit of an absence - welcome home! - and dixiehellcat showed us some of the projects she's found that relate to labs and science geek projects which could be very useful for Ravenclaw Wierd Science assignments (post 13505). Minsue showed us a useful pattern for 'trilobite' and a trilobite hat too (post 13541). JacquiG introduced the subject of 'knooking' (post 13490) which was totally new to me and made me scurry off to look it up. theflyinggoat posted videos of the brilliant Harry Potter 30-second bunnies (post 13552) and also showed us her handspun for her OWL (post 13593). InsanKnitty announced that she was looking for a Quidditch Assistant captain as she'd be starting a new job soon, so congrats insanKnitty! MariainCT brought up a very popular conversation topic when she asked for advice from the House Mommas about how to know when her little girl was ready for Kindergarten. Lots of Mommas replied with very valuable opinions, and lots of other Ravenclaws contributed from their own experience too. This conversation began on page 544 if you want to look through it.

Tuesday brought the fantastic news that Yakira and her Larry made it back into their own house after all their time at the hospital. Conversations on sofabeds and kindergarten continued over Tuesday, and Mommyknitz informed us that her project had been featured on the designer's pattern front page - yay! (post 13630) Discussions also evolved onto talking about introverted and extroverted personalities, and Myers-Briggs style tests (linked in rambunctiousky's post 13633). -Knit-Chick- was worried/stoked about having a video conference with scientists that live and work in the Arctic. Lots of Ravenclaws went on to talk about their favourite types of tea and where to get them from, roughly about page 547ish. Akasha111182 and Sadielou won the Love Yourself First prizes from a random draw made by Silverwing26. GusGus asked for advice about what to wear for an interview for her first ever job (a peer councillor position) and got lots of lovely replies (post 13705). Linen yarn was discussed, and it was heartily recommended by Ravenclaws that it really softens up and drapes fantastically once it's been washed (13738 for minsue's pics).

Particularly geeky percentages conversations followed on from the Myers-Briggs test chat on page 551 onwards on Wednesday. QallieQ came to visit the Tower from the Slytherin Dungeon and was welcomed with open arms. By Wednesday Claws could work out how many points they'd earned for Ravenclaw in January as all the assignments had been graded and posted. Lots more progress reports and awesome assignments handed in. Beyby reported that her OWL knitting might have been thrown out :Gasp! Shock! Horror!: by a well-meaning mother. DevonC travelled home and asked Claws to guess how many trains she had to take to get there... the answer was 7! Heathen won a DevonC Original Ravenclaw Necklace (TM). See post 13833 for details of said 7 trains. BrineyDeep announced that unofficial points are up on the blog and at the time of writing we're just about 200 points behind the Snakies, and the Gryffs are just behind us so it's going to be close! There were some grumbles about the smaller number of people getting bonus points than in previous terms, but it was also pointed out that the volume of assignments has increased dramatically and therefore so has the quality of projects and so the bar has been raised for handins. JacquiG posted lots of complicated maths chat about prime numbers (post 13847) and SFCorgi has offered her flickr pics of her dogs if anyone wants to use them to gain bonus points for the cutenesses (post 13882). DevonC posted a helpful list of 'things that might get bonus points for her class, and probably for others too (post 13903). InsanKnitty posted that minsue will be the Asst. Quidditch Captain for Ravenclaw. Those going to 'Stitches' discussed the merits of going (see SFCorgi's advice post 13952 for those considering yarn-related trips). Kethrim won a Star of Isis for her Potions assignment.

On Thursday Boppingbeth told us about her daughter's first race at her Nordic Ski Club (post 13983) and Gazebogal asked if anyone had a copy of 'Berk, Laura E., Development through the Lifespan'. Peeves was pipped at the post for the 14000th post, as we talk too quickly for him! Sea-Jelly popped in to tell us that she loved our Library of the week, and then inkslinger1121 asked for advice on how to deal with an over-involved mother (post 14041) and once again the Claws came through with lots of lovely advice and kind words. Gazebogal made a difference politically on page 562, and Heathen plotted how to get rid of her coworkers on the next page. Scarlettb stopped by to offer advice on the subject, after all, she is one of the mistresses of the Dungeon! xoxoMargot got sick of auditions but used Rav and Knitting to de-stress. MGY reported in about the horrible plane crash near her and all those affected were added to the candle-lighting list here on the blog. CMel asked for advice about how to fix some loose stitches, and mostly was told to wet-block it out. She also informed the Tower about the current plagiarism lawsuit JKR is facing regarding her books, see post 14182 for details. GusGus updated us on how her interview went (post 14212) and Ielith's Ember popped in very briefly despite her person being very busy and overwhelmed!

Friday found DevonC suggesting a mini-WEBs trip and planning has begun... djmeurer asked about the RS of feather-and-fan and found that it should be mostly little knit 'V's. AlexisT posted a huge Quidditch Commentary in the Quidditch thread featuring tons of players so if you haven't already, go check it out (1437 in the Quidditch thread). Wildlilly found out about the madness that is WEBs and Foxy offered to Foxysit the insanKiddies for insanKnitty. On page 573 we started a game of food pairings, where you take the last thing the person before you suggested and pair it with something else, so on and so forth. Great fun, but do not read if you're hungry! DevonC loves the Gaiman-read audiobook of Neverwhere she's got at the moment thanks to the recommendation of her Ravenclaw peers. MGY posted an awesome Uniform Montage in the Quidditch Thread (post 1464 in there). Friday's Nat.Geog. Photo of the day was a relative of our dear Foxy (post 14427). Eightlegeddj told us that she makes a gorgeous spiced cranberry jam, perfect for pb & j sandwiches, and also shared some details of her v. complicated family situation (post 14457) which led to a discussion on confusing families, and for Mommy2Benny to share a gorgeous pic of her little nephew Lucas Forrest (post 14466) and Wildlilly to show us her handsome nephews Mason and Sammy (post 14487). Greenegirl told us about how her husband is on to her sneaky ways of trying to convert him to the 'world of cotton and pointy sticks' (post 14497).

On Saturday SFCorgi got a Star of Isis for her Potions assignment (post 14531) and theflyinggoat linked us to 'Fisk' which I lovelovelove (post 14533). MGY told us about the Austin Beard Championship which she had to go to. The world of Flat Harrys was revealed to us by abetterjulie (post 14553) which led onto some picture evidence of Flat Stanleys and things over the next few pages. Fricknfrack calmed CMel when she was stressed (post 14584) and minsue showed that she always knew where her towel was (post 14589). DevonC appealed for pics of horrible intarsia gone wrong due to being too tight, and MGY appealed for advice on her crochet basket which seems to be too loose. In post 14613 AshleyTree showed us all how to whisper in the tower and -Knit-Chick- showed us how to shout in post 14632, meanwhile Gazebogal poisoned Eightlegeddj with kelp (post 14577). Oliveknits has had a bad week so has been added to the candle-light list and -Knit-Chick- names her Gillyweed 'George' (page 587). The most recent update on Katestamps told us that she was KNITTING! Go Kate! DixieHellCat showed us pics of her Mdm Defarge scarf made with secret coded knitting (post 14715) and SFCorgi posted pics of an Angora bunny with all its fluff on it (post 14719).

DISCLAIMER: Please bear in mind while reading that my days begin about 8 hours earlier than most of yours so if I say something happened on a Wednesday and you remember writing about it on a Tuesday, you know what I mean. Also, I haven't included every project handed in, birthday or appeal for candle-lighting that happened for the sake of brevity. I haven't linked posts because that would take forever and probably break Blogger, but have listed post or page numbers where I deem it appropriate.

My First OWL: A first year’s account of sitting an OWL exam

My first semester at Hogwarts! How exciting! After reading the OWL descriptions I thought I’d jump right on in and settled on sitting the Care of Magical Creatures OWL. It is my favorite class and I loved Hagrid’s lessons with Buckbeak. One day I hope that I will be lucky enough to befriend a Hippogriff!

Dragons have been favorite characters of mine ever since I was a little girl and read Dealing with Dragons by Patricia Wrede. I began searching for an appropriate dragon pattern to hatch my egg and messaged my mama eagle, Becky (aka mommyknitz), asking for pattern search help on Ravelry. Even though there were several great designs, I did not find what I was looking for, a dragon pattern that used three colors. As with many other designers, I decided to design my own pattern because what I desired to knit hadn’t been designed yet!

I wanted to use three colors because the last time I used that technique I had given the project away as a gift. Over time I realized it was the thing I was most proud of knitting, and I felt sad that it was gone. With the inspiration from HPKCHP I became inspired to take up another three color knitting project; and this time it would be for me. I designed a dragon chart that I have grown to love more and more. My dragon is very much a product of my personal creative process, and that makes her even more special to me.

With the chart ready I pulled some needles and yarn, took pictures, and posted my proposal in the Ravenclaw Tower to make sure I didn’t forget anything. I cannot express how much it meant to me when other ‘Claws admired my chart and some even asked for a pattern. It simply feels wonderful to have other knitters give such positive feedback to my creative ideas. Thank you.

Three color knitting is quite a lot of fun as well as a challenge. When I first tried this technique I was inspired by a Kaffe Fassett book in which he says something to the effect of just try it! I used a combination of intarsia and stranded color techniques and at one point had 12 different balls of yarn attached to the knitting!

I loved watching my dragon emerge stitch by stitch, row by row. Now the chart is finished and my dragon has come to life. I named her Gwenyth, because it sounded and felt right. I am still working on the rest of the bag and look forward to being able to carry around some of my best work.

Gwenyth would have never been born if it had not been for this group, this exam, and my wonderful house. I am supremely grateful to everyone who sent me encouraging words, advise, and help. I couldn’t have done it without you.

Spotlight on Astronomy

This month's Astronomy assignment is limited only by your imagination! Our professor Snowqueen73 introduced us to the Greek theory of Antichton. Even though this theory is now outdated, it is quite fun to speculate as to what a mirror of earth may be like. What lives there? What is the climate like? Where are the continents? Are there seas? Does it have moons? Are there clouds in the sea and fish in the sky?

Stories about voyaging into space almost always include descriptions of the fantastic new planets the characters encounter and what those new plants are like. My favorite ideas for this assignment come from these stories and the descriptions of the wildly different plants and animals that may inhabit the planets of outer space. One of the things that made the plants and animals of the recent movie Avatar so beautiful were the bioluminescent qualities shared by the living organisms of the planet. I wonder if the plants and animals of Antichton all share some similar quality. Or are they as diverse as the plants and animals found on earth?

I enjoy making amigurumi, which are small stuffed animals that are usually heart-stoppingly cute. They are fun to make, relatively speedy, and many patterns could be easily adapted into new animals. A few extra legs or some added antennae could make a normal panda bear into an extraordinary animal from Antichthon!

Another idea is the possibility that all of the creatures that Muggle consider to be mythical originated on Antichthon. Did the phoenix rule the land with wisdom or the sphinx with wit and riddle? Perhaps no one species ruled and the dragons lived in harmony with the mermaids. If they did come from Antichton, how did they arrive on earth and what made them take a journey cross the sun?

We have already had some excellent submissions to this class that demonstrate the superb creativity of the house cuppers. There has been time travel, miniatures, fairies, ice crystals, bunnies, and humanoid creatures. It has been a most enjoyable class to watch and think of new possibilities for the twin of earth. I look forward to reading about the ideas that you come up with!

REMINDER

As we move into Ravelympics, don’t forget to keep nominating your housemates for the Mad Scientist Award.

I’ve been nominating many inventive and ridiculous projects, but I’m one of those people who can’t keep up. I’m relying on all of you to watch out for the brilliance of your fellow students - of which there is plenty!

Light one candle

Hi, Fellow Claws!

I've added a sidebar with a list of recent candle-lighting requests. I'll update it as I can (daily most likely). Let me know if I miss one. :) Soprano1

Welcome to the Aerie

Dear Fellow Ravenclaws,

Ever missed a challenge because you came home after a long weekend to find 500 posts in the Common Room? Ever awoken in the morning to find feathers all over the floor and just couldn't scroll through enough pages to figure out what exactly MightyGoodYarn did in the lab? Or discovered that Foxy and Ember were handing out toasted marshmallows while you were knitting?

So much goes on in our Tower that it's sometimes hard to keep up, and to sort the Really Important Information from the Chatter. But take heart, Fellow 'Claws! Here on our Public Blog we shall highlight each week's events, clue you in to the antics of the Merry Beasts, and maybe even let you drool over pictures of hot libraries.

Please let me--that's "Mama Eagle" Soprano1--know if there's something you think should be highlighted in the blog, because while I read almost every post I do work outside of my house and sometimes y'all have been chatting up a blue streak while I'm out wrangling kiddos. I'll do a weekly wrap-up each weekend, but I'm also more than willing to accept help from other Ravenclaws who want to do some blogging.

Cheers!
Soprano1
