RavenLore -- Blanket Forts and Spoons

Today, I'm going to take a look at a couple of things that have been unfortunately common around the Tower recently.

Blanket Forts -- A blanket fort is a place of refuge.  Remember when you were a kid and draped some blankets over a couple of chairs, or maybe built a little hidey-hole with some couch cushions? That's a blanket fort.  Ravenclaws retreat to blanket forts for a number of reasons. They may not be feeling well, either emotionally or physically. They may be hiding from the Mallet or needing to replenish their spoon stash.  Sometimes they just need a break either from every day  life or from some extraordinarily stressful event. Blanket forts appear as needed, though there is generally one set up in the CR. Some dorms have them as well. Mama Eagle LASH has provided some good links to the history of the blanket fort in this post.

Word of the Week -- Spoons.  Sometimes a spoon is just an eating utensil, but usually when you see that word around Ravenclaw, it means something else.  Spoon theory was first published by Christine Miserandino in the blog But You Don't Look Sick.  It is a way of expressing the way some of us need to ration our mental or physical energies.  You can be generally out of spoons, or be out of either mental or physical spoons, or not have the spoons for a specific activity or situation. It is a handy shorthand for letting people how you are doing.

Thank you to LASH for her helpful research!

Is there a particular Ravenclaw tradition or word you are puzzled by?  Is there some bit of ancient (or not so ancient) Tower history you are curious about? Let us know! You can either reply in the comments or PM omeletsmom or s2five. We'll do our best to answer any questions you have -- or track down someone who can!

Last Week in the Common Room

Patchwork--the game, not quilts.

A celebratory party erupted near the blanket fort!

Quaffles were flying fast & furious as Match 2 came to a close!

2 Tower residents showed off some serious cake decorating skills.

Washing machine designers take note: knitters need a machine that will soak but not agitate. Top-loading so we can also full/felt. It matters, and there's a market out there!

Geek of the Week - Milton Bradley

In keeping with our term theme of games, today’s geek of the week has a name nearly synonymous with American board games – Milton Bradley.

Bradley was born in 1836 in Maine. He started a career as a draftsman, and eventually moved into lithography. In 1860, he opened the first color lithography shop in Springfield, Massachusetts. He had initial success after printing an image of Abraham Lincoln, but after Lincoln grew his beard the prints were extremely unpopular. He decided to pursue other options, and released a board game that he called The Checkered Game of Life.

The game was an instant success – by 1861, Bradley had sold more than 45,000 copies. It’s popularity may have stemmed from the fact that, unlike previous “board games,” the goal of the game was to WIN, not just to demonstrate moral values.

During the Civil War, Bradley shifted his focus to creating small games that soldiers could play during their long periods of tedium, including games like checkers and chess.

Bradley went on to found the Milton Bradley Company, which then released many of the century’s most popular board games. He also became very involved in promoting kindergarten, and the company began manufacturing colored papers and paints for educational purposes. He was posthumously inducteded into the Toy Industry Hall of Fame in 2004.

Firstie (and Transfer!) Friday!

It's Firstie Friday again!

Alfiriel (Carmen)

How did you find the Cup and what motivated you to give the Cup a try? I heard about the cup on a podcast I guess about a year ago. I looked into it and was a bit intimidated and decided it was not for me. But last year in September my LYS had the bimonthly knit night and I met TShaya who is a fellow Ravenclaw and she invited me to play. She was so enthusiastic that I handed in the hat I was working on for class as soon as it was finished. Also I’m a big Harry Potter enthusiast and I kind of need the added motivation to finish knitting projects. It is working out quite well so far :)

What, in your own estimation, is your wackiest/most awesome project and why? My wackiest project so far has to be the dwarven battle bonnet I made for a friend for his birthday. The most awesome one is my celestarium I think. I love the stars and the little tardis flying around there :)

What characteristics do you love most about the Tower so far? How do these things impact and change or encourage you? I love the sense of community - everyone really is genuinely nice and also interested in learning and helping each other. The first year dorm is quite chatty and I try to keep up so I haven’t explored too much outside of our dorm yet. But it does really cheer me up when I’ve had a bad day at work and I’m really motivated to earn as many points as I can for this awesome house.

What is on your crafting bucket list? I would love to make a really good fitting sweater with lots of cables. In my mind I have a wardrobe full of hand knit sweaters.

What is currently on your needles? Currently I’m working on a second sock that I will turn in for detention.

Hnick  (Heidi)

How did you find the Cup and what motivated you to give the Cup a try? Many knitters were cross-posting their sock projects between the Cup and my group, often earburning me, so I was curious. And… I am a diehard Harry Potter fan.

What, in your own estimation, is your wackiest/most awesome project and why? Wackiest, hmm not sure, would need to think about that. Most awesome would probably be my Catwoman versus Elektra socks, I really love that design.

What characteristics do you love most about the Tower so far? The camaraderie, the team spirit, the community. It’s a fun group to be a part of. How do these things impact and change or encourage you? I love being part of a “family” (albeit online, although sometimes that turns into an IRL meeting) with women who share my love for fiber and turning it into beautiful things.

What is on your crafting bucket list? Weaving is next!

What is currently on your needles? Many things, socks and hats mostly. I’m messing around with a top-down hat design with earflaps, cables and winding vines/leaves.

RavenLore - Pickle Badges and Crazypants

With the appearance of the first Pickle Badges of the term last week, there have been some questions about what exactly they are, so I thought it might be a good time to go over the various badges.

PickleBadges are awards given throughout the term by our dear Head of House, PickleMommy (so named because her children are called the gherkins). She goes through all the various projects turned in by Ravenclaws and picks ones that she finds outstanding in some way. There are several different kinds of badges --

Darth Pickle -- given for projects that make PM laugh.

Electric Pickle -- given for projects where the crafter tried something unique or innovative (for science!)

Golden Pickle -- given for projects that stand out for some reason.  There are no set criteria; they are just projects that grab PM's attention.

Pickle of Pickles -- this one has only been given twice!  It is awarded for only "the most stunning and spectacular, unbelievably impossible achievements!"

Pickle of Sanity -- given to students who have managed to outrun the Mallet of Sanity and turn a truly crazypants project.

Tragic Pickle -- This is one badge PM never wants to give out.  It is reserved for otherwise wonderful projects that have had something tragic happen to them.

And finally, the

Big Dill Badge -- this one is also extremely rare.  It only happens if PM's husband happens to be sitting next to her when she is reviewing the turn ins and something catches his eye.

Pickle badges are awarded roughly bi-monthly during the term.  Not all badges are awarded every time; it just depends on what has been turned in and what strikes PMs fancy.

Word of the Week -- Crazypants is both a noun and an adjective.  It is used most often as an adjective to describe an outrageous project -- "That is a really crazypants proposal!" -- but it can also be used as a noun -- "Those Ravenclaws really wear the crazypants!"   Of course, being Ravenclaws, some of us have literal crazy pants.  Mine have Owls on them.

Hydrolicious has been proposed to replace moist.

More talented injuries!

Are a UPS truck's measurements a good substitute for an elephant? Discuss.

Geek of the Week -- Fannie Jackson Coppin

In conjunction with the Class Tetris team's Detention badge, this week we are profiling African American educator Fannie Jackson Coppin as our Ravenclaw Geek of the Week.

Fannie Jackson was born into slavery in 1837, but was freed at the age of 10 or 12 (sources differ) when her aunt was able to purchase her.  By the age of 14, she was working as a domestic and fitting in education however she could.  She was eventually able to attend the Rhode Island State Normal School and Oberlin College in Ohio. As a junior at Oberlin, she became the first black student instructor, taking on two classes for Oberlin and organizing evening classes for freedmen.

Upon graduation, Fannie began teaching at The Institute for Colored Youth, now Cheyney University.  Within four years she became the principal of the school, the first African American woman to hold that position.  She spent 37 at the Institute and greatly expanded the curriculum at the school, adding industrial arts, a normal school (teachers college), and a practice teaching program.  In addition she persuaded employers to hire her graduates and established a home for girls and young women to have safe accommodations while they were working.

Fannie Jackson married the Rev. Levi Coppin in 1881. She continued with her work at the Institute as well as advocating for civil and women's rights. She retired in 1902 and journeyed with her husband to South Africa, where they founded a missionary school in Cape Town. Fannie Jackson Coppin died on this day, January 21, in 1913.  Coppin State University in Baltimore is named in her honor.

For her determination to acquire an education and her lifelong zeal for helping others do the same, Fannie Jackson Coppin is a most deserving Ravenclaw Geek of the Week!

Firstie (and Transfer!) Friday

It's Firstie Friday again! Time to meet two more incredible Firsties!

Kneedleart (Linda)

How did you find the Cup and what motivated you to give the Cup a try? I saw a discussion on Heidi Nick’s sock design group, and joined along with Heidi (another Ravenclaw Firstie) and some other members of the group. I was delighted to learn that Heather (winemakerssister) was a member of the HPKCHC and a Ravenclaw, as I’ve long admired her spinning in another group in which we participate. I am over-the-moon happy to now have Heather as my Big Eagle!

What, in your own estimation, is your wackiest/most awesome project and why? I normally spin fairly traditional yarns, although occasionally enjoy the challenge of an unconventional yarn. Last year, I participated in a “crazy yarn” challenge and spun a super-coiled, beaded, pig-tailed yarn (as described by Sarah Anderson in A Spinner’s Book of Yarn Design). It was, by far, the wackiest, most technically demanding yarn I have ever spun. While spinning this yarn, I thought I might turn it into a Medusa wig for Halloween. However, by the time I finished, I knew that I wanted to use it, along with some tail-spun yarn that I previously crafted, for a great big dream catcher. I love this project as it liberated my creative juices and allowed me to respond to and draw inspiration from my materials, rather than executing pre-determined plans for the fiber. As a result of this experience, I have chosen to incorporate an annual crazy yarn challenge into my personal spinning goals.

What characteristics do you love most about the Tower so far? How do these things impact and change or encourage you? Oooh, I love the tradition of listing our Happy Things. Here are some of mine:
·         My fellow Ravenclaws, with their thoughtful and challenging input, their creative talents, and their kind/considerate dispositions. I am inspired and motivated by the members of my House to aim high and put forth my best effort.
·         CASPN, because we all benefit from a few warm fuzzies every once in a while!
·         As a NQFY, I participated in the Fall Term edition of Convocation and was totally hooked. It was very exciting to be earburned to each installment, and that encouraged me to keep submitting classes to earn the next earburn. The creative writing was first rate and the lessons thought-provoking. Convocation kept me humble last term; I look forward to the start of Convocation W17.
·         The Ravenclaw geneaology! I love that we track our lineage; it serves as a treasured reminder of who we are, where we’ve been, and the artistic influences that we’ve handed down through the branches of our family tree. Seeing my name on our lineage made me feel special, as though I belonged to something larger than each of us, individually - something precious and enduring.
·         The Ravenclaw Aerie grabbed my attention as a NQFY. Some of the features that I particularly enjoyed were the Showcase Wednesdays and Geek of the Week. I also enjoy keeping abreast of happenings in the Common Room (when the post count gets too high for me to read everything myself) and I am really looking forward to this term’s coverage of Ravenclaw Lore! This will be a huge help to Firsties and Transfer students who may not yet know the “inside” stores and specialized lingo.
Well, I could go on all day, but I’m sure you have other things to report in this issue, so I’ll end by saying that I LOVE IT ALL!
What is on your crafting bucket list? Sometimes, it is the little things that elude me - such as top-down gloves. I’ve been wanting to try a pair of these for a while, but they keep getting put on the back burner. The Evil Genius Glove Recipe particularly intrigues me. These will be a priority for my 2017 knitting; I’m thinking that their small size will keep me from becoming over-heated by my knitting this summer. Now that I’ve made this declaration, feel free to hold me accountable!

What is currently on your needles? Tonight, I’m working on a pair of leg warmers/boot toppers for a niece’s daughter. These will be my class assignment for our Herbology Blitz on January 22nd. I am also working on a scarf for my Charms class assignment and a hat for another submission. I am eagerly awaiting delivery of yarn so that I may submit my Charms OWL proposal to knit a wedding wrap for a friend’s daughter.

Neetsey

How did you find the Cup and what motivated you to give the Cup a try? I'm a stalker, I admit it! I run another group and whenever someone new joins I go take a peek at their projects and groups they are in....then I saw The HP group!

What, in your own estimation, is your wackiest/most awesome project and why? The reason I joined Ravelry actually....I was part of the original MCL Sophie's Universe. I completed it with the optional Lydia and Jack square to make it rectangular, it is a Queen size afghan, and I am so proud of it.

What characteristics do you love most about the Tower so far? I love the support and encouragement and making feel like I belong.

How do these things impact and change or encourage you? I am feeling more adventurous, I am even attempting knitted socks for my first mission, never thought I would do that.

What is on your crafting bucket list? I really want to crochet the Last Supper, I have the thread, I just need to do it, maybe for an owl.....

What is currently on your needles? A test knit shawl, and a Boo shawl.......not counting all my WIPs....lol

There is one other type of Pickle Badge to award this week.  In Ravenclaw, we are well known for threatening people with the Mallet of Sanity when they decide to attempt unbelievable feats with their crafting.  The Pickle of Sanity Badge is awarded to those 'Claws who not only attempt the incredible but also succeed in outrunning the Mallet of Sanity!  All of the 'Claws earning this badge this week have managed these feats in only about two weeks!

kvaustin did it again and knit an entire sweater, using an amazing 1100 yards of yarn, for Charms!

hnick spun an incredible 1728 yards of singles and plied them for Flying!

cn32, also a Pickle of Sanity veteran, crocheted a blanket using an unbelievable 2800 yards of yarn for Transfiguration!
