This week, we are profiling a group of crafters who have used their skills with crochet hooks to call attention a serious environmental problem, the bleaching of coral reefs.
Darwin, Australia Territory Wildlife Park crafts coordinator Jasmine Jan approached the crocheters after seeing a display of poppies crocheted for Anzac day. She proposed an exhibit at the park showing crocheted replicas of both healthy and bleached coral to raise awareness of the problem. More and more crafting groups volunteered, and crocheters met at the park weekly to work on their creations.
Using both the internet and books, the crafters researched the various corals and the creatures that live among them and then adapted existing patterns to create them.
It's taken many crafters and a whole year, but the reef is now finished and on display at the park. According to Jan "It's all about creating awareness about global warming and coral bleaching through art." [1]
For the very Ravenclaw trait of using craft to educate, we are delighted to name Jasmine Jay and her Coral Warriors Geeks of the Week.
