Geek of the Week: Mae Jemison, Ignatia Wildsmith

Welcome to "Geek of the Week"; here we honor one Muggle geek and one Wizard geek who embody Ravenclaw spirit...
when they succeed, they soar, and when they fail, they fail spectacularly!

Mae Jemison (b. 1956)
"You can hear other people’s wisdom, but you’ve got to re-evaluate the world for yourself."

Happy almost-birthday to Mae Jemison, the first African-American woman in space!  After she graduated from Stanford with a double major in chemical engineering and African and Afro-American Studies, Jemison decided to stop pursuing dance as a career and instead got her medical degree from Cornell.

Jemison served as the Peace Corps Medical Officer for Sierra Leone and Liberia for a couple years and researched hepatitis B, schistosomaisis, and rabies for the NIH and the CDC.  In 1987 she was selected to be an astronaut; she logged 190 hours, 30 minutes, 23 seconds in space and did some bone cell research while she was up there.
She speaks fluent Russian, Japanese, and Swahili.

Not enough geek cred yet?  This also happened:

 Aw yeah.

Ignatia Wildsmith (1227 - 1320)

Ignatia Wildsmith was sorted into Ravenclaw as a student at Hogwarts.  She excelled in herbology and concentrated her focus on floo, a flowering plant with magical properties.  Wildsmith's work harnessed these properties into Floo Powder, now used in conjunction with the Floo Network as today's main transportation method.
