Geek of the Week: Wil Wheaton

Welcome to this term's inaugural "Geek of the Week" feature; here we honor Muggle geeks who embody Ravenclaw spirit...
when they succeed, they soar, and when they fail, they fail spectacularly!

Wil Wheaton (b. 1972)

"Things every person should have: a nemesis; an evil twin; a secret headquarters; an escape hatch; a partner in crime; a secret identity."

Wil Wheaton is a well-known American actor.  He's been seen in such movies as Stand by Me and Toy Soldiers, in the current gamer-centric web series The Guild, and in geektastic television shows like The Big Bang Theory and Eureka...
SEE ALSO: WESLEY CRUSHER.  So very adorable professional.
His voice work runs the gamut from The Secret of NIMH (at age 10, as Martin Brisby) to video games (several GTA titles, Fallout New Vegas, etc.); Wil's frequent blogging has expanded into a writing career of several publications, including the autobiographical Just a Geek (oh yes, I own it and it's awesome).

Other geekiness:  he was once roommates with Nerdist founder Chris Hardwick, he narrated the Redshirts audio book, and he's the host of a web series about board games (Tabletop, via Geek & Sundry on YouTube).

I'm trying not to fangirl too much (failing, I bet!)!  Oh, this happened, too!:
I'm sorry/You're welcome.

Find out more about Wil Wheaton on Wikipedia.
And here's his blog, if you're interested.

Meet Our Blog Staff!

Cyprienne:
Third year 'Claw Cyprienne is a metadata librarian by training, an English major by education, and a recovering World of Warcraft addict by accident. She likes to make lists (and use parentheses); also, semi-colons, for reasons. Dashes are fun, too -- yay! Cyp loves to sing, hates to vacuum, and geeks out to the following: HP, Firefly, Sherlock, Doctor Who, Star Wars (original IV/V/VI), and Game of Thrones.

HapticTraveler:
HapticTraveler, BA2, and Ravenclaw for all but her first term. She has been knitting for about 6 years now. While she has close family members who spin/weave and dye she has resisted the lure of further textilish hobbies. Not to worry though. She has many hundreds of books, an eclectic collection of music, well used backpacking gear, and moleskin of musings to keep her busy. She is looking forward to another term soaring with Ravenclaw!

Honeyspoon:
Third year Ravenclaw and lover of pie, Honeyspoon works in orthotics and prosthetics both as a practitioner and as a researcher. She loves chunky yarns, fingerless gloves, and cable patterns. When she's not knitting, she enjoys running, playing Race for the Galaxy, reading, taking photographs, and watching her favorite TV shows. This term she plans to knit her first adult sweater and become a Quidditch All-Star.

MadMadeleine:
She is a fourth year Ravenclaw, has been knitting for 7 years, and couldn't imagine her life without yarn. In her non-knitting time, she attends school, reads, listens to music, writes, and watches insane amounts of geeky TV. She's looking forward to another term as a Ravenclaw blogger!

A New Term

Personally, the anticipation of a new term always brings about moments of reflection. What was I most proud of last term? What do I wish I had done differently? What new skill will I choose to learn next term? Then there are the fun tasks of looking through my queue, my WIPS, and my favorites as well as conducting pattern searches in order to prioritize projects for the next term. Inevitably my plans will change a thousand times throughout the term as I find unexpected inspiration from class prompts, Quidditch events, and the Headmistress' Challenge.

Yes, all of this thinking about crafting is fun but as I reflect, I know what matter the most to me are the friendships I've made. Some of you know far better than I do how much love there is in The Tower. Some of you will observe Candle Requests and moments of squee-ing in the Common Room or your dorm, notice how much love there is, and then venture to make yourself known as well.

So as we all begin a new term I'd like to challenge you to not only think about your crafting goals, but also think about how you might encourage your fellow Claws in whatever aspects of their lives they choose to share whether it's their crafting lives, their family lives, or their work lives. Because really, there can never be too much love.

SOAR RAVENCLAW!
